6 days tour from Marrakech to Tangier

One of our staff will meet you either at the airport, at your accommodation or at the agreed location. Our 6-day tour starts with the departure from Marrakech and the drive to the High Atlas Mountains. This is the highest mountain range in Morocco and home to many Berber families. As we cross it, you will see many small villages and fields. The Tizi n’Tichka is the highest pass in Morocco that can be crossed and offers an impressive view with its 2260 meters above sea level. On the other side, as we descend, you will see the traditional way of life of the locals.

We stop to visit the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou, located in the heart of the salt road that once supplied Timbuktu. We continue to Ouarzazate, the capital of cinema, which is home to several studios. There are also some impressive kasbahs here. On the other side, we pass the palm grove of Skoura and enter desert landscapes. Next stop is the rose capital of Kelaat M’gouna, where the fragrant Damascene roses are grown and harvested. We follow the Rose Valley into the Dades Valley, an important and fertile region where figs and many vegetables are grown. In the town of Boumalne we drive up to the Dades Gorge where you will spend the first night.

In the morning you will have the opportunity to visit the impressive gorge and take photos. Back in the valley, we continue through kasbahs and villages to Tinghir. From here we drive up to Todra Gorge, a massive fault carved into a 300 meter high gorge by the crystal clear waters of the river. Returning to Tinghir, we follow the road as it turns south, passing date palm groves and mud brick villages on our way to the Sahara. In the afternoon we reach Merzouga, where the camels are ready for their ride over the dunes at sunset. Arriving at the camp, a mint tea is served as a welcome and dinner is prepared. The locals play music around the campfire and the stars are your companions.

Today you will explore this special region with its hidden oases, nomadic families, mines, fossils, petroglyphs and remote villages. We will also drive to Rissani with its colorful souk. This town is the last major city before the desert and an important trading center. Here you can also find a specialty called Medfouna, a pizza filled with meat, eggs and spices that is delicious straight from the oven. We will also visit Khamlia, a village inhabited by descendants of Sudanese slaves who worked in the mines in the region. They tell their stories through the Gnawa music they play for the visitors. In the afternoon we will return to Merzouga where you will spend the night in a hotel with dinner and breakfast.

Today we leave the desert behind and head north to Erfoud, the fossil capital. Here there are workshops and museums dedicated to the fossils, minerals and dinosaur bones found in the region. Continuing north, we reach the Ziz Valley with its extensive palm groves and hidden kasbahs. Vast landscapes of nomadic pastures, rivers, lakes and mountains dominate the scene as we reach the apple capital of Midelt for a lunch break. As the forests of Azrou come into view, you will also see nomadic families living in tents and handmade structures, herding their animals. In the vast cedar forests, Barbary macaques live in the trees and can be seen passing through. In the town of Ifrane, you will be surprised by the alpine architecture and the sloping roofs. As the landscape opens up, we will drive down to the city of Fes where you will spend the night.

Fez is the spiritual capital of Morocco, and this morning we will organize a guided tour to show you some of the most important monuments and sites of this car-free zone with 9000 streets. In each of the numerous quarters there is a fountain, a bakery, a school and a mosque. Some of them are still very well preserved and worth a visit. After a lunch break we continue our journey and visit the Roman archaeological site of Volubilis with its beautiful mosaics and columns. In the late afternoon, we will arrive in Chefchaouen, the famous blue city in Morocco where you will spend the night. You can have dinner in the marketplace and soak up the atmosphere of the city.

The morning is at leisure to explore the multi-layered blue streets and neighborhoods of this historic city. Its history spans several centuries and includes the Spanish occupation. With the Jewish quarter, there are 5 quarters, each with a hammam, a mosque, a bakery and a fountain. After lunch we will head north to Tangier, crossing beautiful forest landscapes with rivers and lakes.
